It is said to be the world’s oldest continuously<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>broadcasting radio station. It beat KDKA onto the air. Many<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>older stations exist, of course, but they didn’t broadcast.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>They communicated with ships or military units, using Alexanderson<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>alternators, arc transmitters, and other scary pieces<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>of equipment.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The amateur radio club doing the special event in<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>late September has been granted the one-time call sign of<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>WW0WWV. It will operate just outside the security fence<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>of the Fort Collins facility, which is a fairly quick drive up<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>from Denver. The plan is to make like its namesake and stay<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>on-air around the clock. WWV does this too, but then it sort<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>of is the clock, being totally governed by atomic standards.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>This is a major undertaking for a ham radio station, and it<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>will need a lot of licensed ops to get through the scheduled<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>five days from September 30 to October 2. The QSL should<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>be awesome, though.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The National Institute of Standards and Technology,<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>formerly the National Bureau of Standards, plans to have its<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>own observance on October 1. According to a news item on<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>the ARRL site, this will include some kind of open house<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>at the station, which is normally a high-security facility. If<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>this is true, it ought to be good. WWV is a very nice setup<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>indeed.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>As long as we’re doing WWV, there was a news item<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>a few days ago concerning a new announcement slot for the<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) at 10 minutes past the<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>hour. It’ll also be on WWVH at 50 past the hour. Messages<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>pertain to exercises of interest to MARS members. They’re<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>scheduled in June, August, and October.
