Dear Jeffery:

Good news for Amateur radio operators who live in communities that basically ban any outside antennas.  The House Energy and Commerce Committee has unanimously approved legislation I helped write that directs the Federal Communications Commission to extend the "reasonable accommodation" provision to Amateur Radio antennas to include all types of land-use regulation, including deed restrictions and restrictive covenants.

This provision is similar to what the FCC and courts have provided to those who want to receive direct broadcast services from satellite video providers.  It's a balanced measure that won the backing of both the HAM radio community and those who represent planned communities where these restrictions have caused a problem.

As a licensed HAM myself, I know the important services operators provide to their communities and country, especially during times of emergency.  As chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, I'll continue to work to work with the FCC to make sure HAMs get fair treatment and that our frequencies are not taken away from us.
