I agree, a members area of the website makes the most sense. 

You could store your documents there for easy access, have a message forum that offered email summaries for those who wanted them. And if you wanted you could easily tie it in with a member management plugin that would handle membership sign-ups and automatic renewals. When someone's membership expired it would no longer allow them to visit the Members area.
