Angela,

I would suggest that you consider a dual band, VHF and UHF radio
because - there are a lot of UHF repeaters in Oregon, especially on
the coast.  We have a few in central Oregon.  One is in Bend at
the Descutes County Sheriff's compound and is owned by our ARES
group and is open to everyone.  A dual band radio also allows you to
cross band to a handheld when you are in the field.  Max can help
you.  I would work with Max to figure out your equipment needs before
you buy anything.

It is also very important to properly wire (install) the equipment in your
vehicle.  Max would be very helpful with that.
