[HiDARG-MEMBERS] Solar Cycle

Because I work with professional grade GNSS gear at work for surveying and mapping, I watch the NOAA Space weather forecast daily with twice daily e-mail blasts. Solar flares are good for HF, bad for GNSS satellite signals, so while I watch for a different reason, the work and hobby aspects do overlap. It has been awhile since I have seen a G3 forecast with the Kp index at 7. That is a no go for precision GNSS surveying, but likely very good for HF propagation.

As with my ground weather forecast, I go straight to the source at NOAA.

Snip from Thursday AM e-mail:

NOAA Kp index breakdown Dec 09-Dec 11 2020

            Dec 09 Dec 10 Dec 11

00-03UT 2 5 (G1) 5 (G1)

03-06UT 3 7 (G3) 6 (G2)

06-09UT 2 5 (G1) 4

09-12UT 1 4 4

12-15UT 3 4 3

15-18UT 3 4 3

18-21UT 4 4 3

21-00UT 5 (G1) 4 3

Rationale: G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is likely to commence late on

09 Dec and continue to be a potential through 11 Dec. Peak storming of

G3 (Strong) is likely to occur early on 10 Dec, and begin to settle from

there with G2 (Moderate) storming likely to occur early on 11 Dec as

North America enters the night time sector.
