Memories of John: He was the only member of HiDARG that was licensed longer than me and I was on the team that cleaned out his radio gear when he and his wife moved to assisted living. What a collection! A large house and shop both literally filled with radio equipment including a six foot rack with a kilowatt AM/CW designed and built by John in the 1950’s and at least four Yaesu FT101E’s. A special radio room completely surrounded with copper screening (including the door) for complete electronic isolation. His antenna farm was one that most of us can only dream about, including a huge Rhombic antenna professionally installed on four telephone poles with gear to lower and raise the antenna on each pole and fed with about 50 yards of open ladder line from his shack/house, also designed and built by John. I have a momento that I bought from his “stock” that sits on my ham desk; a beautifully built and finished wood base with a “Navy” key and paddle mounted on it with separate cables so one can use either at will. I used the key to make my first (and only so far) DXpedition CW contact (to Vanuatu Island) with the key which is identical to the one I used when I was first in radio in the 1950’s. Like Ray, I was flabbergasted by the lineup of Patents neatly framed and lining the wall of his shack. As others have said, he was a master designer of antennas. When he moved to assisted living he received permission to put an antenna out the window to a tree so he could stay active on the ham bands. He said “it isn’t very good but a poor antenna is better than no antenna” a mantra to which I subscribe, living in an antenna restricted HOA.

Truly an amazing ham and person. I wish I had spent more time with him.

Thanks Doc.

So much to say about John….It would take hours to put down all his accomplishments throughout his life.

HiDARG as a club would not be where it is now if not for Johns generosity, not to mention his advice, knowledge, and willingness to help out.

With field day just a week away, it is a reminder to me that except for the last few years….

John has participated in every FD that I have been involved with since I joined HiDARG back in 2009.

And those that knew John for many decades more than I will say the same.

John was on the exam team when I took my tech, general, and I believe my extra.

I only remember John for the first two because during the tech, I noticed him doodling on a sheet

of paper….. he was drawing some odd lines and working on some math formulas.

I found out later he was designing an antenna. During the general he was doing the more doodles.

However, this time I could see he was working on a schematic diagram for a receiver or transmitter.

RIP John…… on behalf of HiDARG I want to thank you for your many thousands of hours of support

to the ham radio community over your lifetime. Your vast knowledge and lifetime achievements in

not only your career but to your community have touched hundreds of thousands in your 94 years.

…Max
